Product Categories
Overview
Group products into categories (and sub-categories) so reports, the POS grid, and the storefront stay organized as your catalog grows.
Step-by-Step Guide
1
Open Categories
Products → Categories.
2
Create Top-Level Category
Click New Category. Name (e.g. "Beverages"), optional icon, optional default tax rate. Save.
3
Add Sub-Categories
Open a category, click + Sub-category. Sub-categories inherit settings from the parent unless overridden.
4
Assign Products
When creating or editing a product, pick the category from the dropdown. Bulk-assign existing products via Products → Bulk Edit → Set Category.
5
Reorder Display
Drag-and-drop categories in the list to change the order they appear on the POS grid and the storefront menu.
Tips & Best Practices
Tip: Keep the category tree shallow (max 2 levels). Deep nesting slows down the cashier and confuses customers on the storefront.
Tip: Use the default-tax-rate field on a category so all products inside inherit the right tax (Standard 18% VAT for retail in Tanzania, for example).
